Aly originally hales from New York, but made her way to Texas in the late ‘70s and finally in 2006. She has an undergraduate degree and a law degree, but after many years in real estate, she became an Interior and Landscape designer.
- A focus for Aly is organization and decluttering as well as providing adjustments for drawers and cabinets for aging in place
- The focus of her presentation was on decluttering spaces and then organizing them….and the stuff and junk we all have
- Some of her suggestions to assist in this endeavor are:
- Think about what you really don’t need or use---then get rid of it either donate it or maybe a family member may want or just junk it
- When considering organizing, only do one room at a time. And if that’s a little overwhelming, start with just part of a room
- For organizing stuff, consider what to keep and how to store it…shelves, bins, drawers…what’s the best for you
- Get a label maker….boxes, bins should all be ID’d
- Once a room is organized, develop better habits to keep things in their proper place
- More of Aly’s suggestions:
- Before you go to the store, always make a list of needed items
- Resist buying in bulk, unless it’s relevant to your household
- Ask family members if they want any of your stuff!
- Only have one junk drawer in the kitchen
- Interior Pantry and Closet doors provide valuable space for storing things
- Important papers should be kept in water tight bins
- Photos and albums should also be kept in water tight bins
- Also, photos should be digitized, put on a flash drive and kept in water tight bins
