South Austin Rotary is a supporter of the soup kitchen directed by Rotary member Mickie Powers. When that Kitchen gets donations that it cannot use, many other people can benefit. Recently excess bread, pastries, and vegetables helped the people at the State of Texas Homeless Camp on South Highway 183 a mile or so north of Highway 71. The food was sorted at the soup kitchen after which the excess was delivered by van to the camp where hundreds hundreds have pitched tents and makeshift structures on 5 acres of asphalt. Mickie says visiting this place always leaves her in disbelief that this place is in America.
