Capt. Canby shared that the USS Ft. Worth is being decommissioned at the end of the month. It will be stripped of parts and then sunk. The City of Ft. Worth is lobbying sister cities to use the ship as a coral reef. Texas and specifically residents of Ft. Worth have been stalwart supporters of the ship throughout its tenure by sending letters and care packages to the service members.

The Rotary Club of Ft. Worth was instrumental in convincing the Navy in naming the ship, USS Ft. Worth. Members visited every two months once it happened. Cmdr. Canby and his fellow sailors are travelling to Texas on a thank you tour. He also let us know that a ship named USS Austin was decommissioned in 2001; Cmdr. Canby says we (Austin folks) might pursue another ship in our name! He says to try for a Columbia class submarine vessel.
