Asst Div Mgr for Austin Resource Recovery
Austin Resource Recovery provides a wide range of services designed to transform waste into resources while keeping our community clean. Our goal is to reach zero waste by 2040, which means reducing the amount of trash sent to landfills by 90%.
Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) is a department of the City of Austin. They have Residential Services, Commercial Services and Apartment and Condominium Resources. They provide essential services that protect people and our planet. We collect recycling, composting, trash, brush, bulk items, household hazardous waste items and dead animals. We also sweep the streets, offer Austin and Travis County residents a service to recycle and safely dispose of household hazardous waste and provide community outreach and education. ARR is driving the global transformation of traditional waste management to sustainable resource recovery. This is where the Southwest Club takes the Styrofoam they collect. A densifier machine is used to shred and melt it into dense blocks which are sold to third-party vendors to be repurposed into products like picture frames and crown molding. Tires are shredded and used for school tracks, playgrounds and rubberized asphalt. In Fiscal Year 2023, the City of Austin's Recycle and Reuse Drop-off Center diverted over 1,600 tons of hard-to-recycle materials and 388 tons of household hazardous waste (HHW) from landfills, including 126 tons of paint. The broader Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) services aim for a 90% landfill diversion rate by 2040, with a current diversion rate for all collections at approximately 37–39%.
