Larry Gonzalez served in the Texas House of Representatives from 2011 to 2018. He is the President of Desk 138, a company that does business consulting and public affairs. He is a professor at Texas State University. He is speaking to us about his involvement with Light Pulse USA, an educational alliance between the US and Kenya.
The main premise of the alliance is that education is the foundation of everything else, giving students opportunity, leading to innovation, strengthens community and builds prosperity that lifts generations out of poverty. The partnership between the US and Kenya is through the Light Academy Schools, with the mission of the partnership to deliver “morally upright, socially responsible and academically competent individuals to society.”
There are Light Academy locations in Nairobi, Mombasa and Malindi.
He is passionate about prioritizing education, especially first generation. In Kenya, half of the college students are first generation. As a result, the alliance is working on a collaboration with Zetech University to create a path to higher education for the Academy students.
Mr. Gonzles closed with a quote, “Educate a student, and you strengthen a family. Strengthen a family, and you strengthen a community. Strengthen communities and you strengthen a nation.”
