Kaitlyn Gebhardt and John Moody from the Marbridge Foundation: Marbridge: A Whole New Life. This program is thanks to Steve Ross’s suggestion. He has a niece at Marbridge and was very impressed with tier services. Kaitlyn began with a plug for Doc’s Backyard – huge supporter of Marbridge.  The whole backwall is devoted to Marbridge.

Marbridge is a facility for over 250 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  It was founded in 1953 by Ed and Marge Bridges to create safe residential care for their son and other adults with cognitive disabilities. It sits on over 200 acres in Manchaca.

Marbridge consists of three different care communities for different abilities:

The Village – most independent. Ability to be out in community. 35 residents hold full-time jobs.

The Ranch – middle level of care.  Provides lodges for folks that need more prompting with care and chores. However, they are still mobile and can get around campus on their own. They hold jobs like working in the kitchen or laundry on site.

The Villa – most skilled.  The youngest resident is 18.  Folks in The Villa need 24/7 care.  It is one of three specialized facilities in the country and the only one in Texas.

John described Marbridge as a bit like a college campus. Over 100 classes are offered throughout the year. Everything is abilities centered and there are lots of options, from yoga to fishing, to cheerleading!

There are many opportunities to volunteer for evening and weekend activities, Special Olympics or the mentor/compassion team. Mentoring/compassion team is one on one with residents need more attention.  Visits take place twice a month just visiting a resident that may not have family around. There is also an opportunity for company volunteering where a whole group volunteers.

Allison suggests our club help with bingo, or something.

Shirley said a Marbridge van brings residents to her church every Sunday.  They are the most enthusiastic!

Marbridge Funfest is on Saturday 17 from 9am-1pm.  It’s a carnival and it’s all about fun! They are looking for boutique vendors, if you know anyone!
