Sylvia Morales is the Asst Director of Visitor and Volunteer Services of the Blanton Museum of Art. Prior to this, Ms. Morales was the Director of the Texas Music Museum in Austin. She hails from El Paso, TX, and received her Bachelors in Advertising from the University of Texas along with a Masters Degree of Science, Information Studies.
Ms. Morales discussed the most recent exhibits and shows at the Blanton including an AI Online exhibit. There are several current and new exhibitions at the Blanton to include “Art in Every Corner: The Works Progress Administration”; “Contemporary Project 16: Tammy Nguyen”; and “Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley” – artists are twin brothers growing up in Austin, TX and now having success nationally and abroad.
An exhibit entitled “Austin” is a cornerstone of the Blanton’s collection. Completed in 2018, the 2,715-square-foot stone building features luminous colored glass windows, a totemic wood sculpture, and fourteen black and white marble panels. Austin honors Ellsworth Kelly’s tradition of naming particular works for the places for which they are destined, the structure is the only building the artist designed and will be his legacy.
With Ms. Morales’ role as Volunteer Services Coordinator, she shared many of the opportunities that volunteers can avail themselves. Aside from docent opportunities, there are group opportunities for corporate experiences and/or team-building events.
Some of the newest programs are Senior Socials—includes light refreshments, Blanton Bingo and art-making workshops. Another is Family Art Adventures Day---hands-on artmaking, outdoor games, interactive activities for all ages; can be an hour or all day. And B Scene—a night at the museum with live music, food/drinks, art tours and dancing.
