Xochitl said that the mission of Foundation Communities is to offer housing to help people to succeed! They are a local, homegrown nonprofit that provides affordable, attractive homes and free on-site support services for thousands of families with kids, as well as veterans, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
They offer an innovative, proven model that empowers residents and neighbors to achieve educational success, financial stability, and healthier lifestyles. They operate 31 apartment communities. – 28 in Austin and three more in North Texas. They provide homes for over 9,000 people many of whom are low-income families, or formerly unhoused children or veterans, seniors or individuals with disabilities.
Their on-site learning centers cut out the transportation challenge that others often face.Children and adults can walk from their home or apartment to an after-school care program or English as a second language class.They also offer college and career coaching to navigate higher education, graduation and beyond.
They offer free tax preparation, financial coaching and money management classes. They also help with health insurance enrollment, access to mental health care including substance misuse treatment and fitness and nutrition classes and healthy food pantries.
They need volunteers to help in all these areas. Some examples are: welcome home baskets, supper club, holiday assistance, care teams, affordable health care enrollment assistance, healthy food distribution help, English as a second language assistant, homework assistance or leading fun enrichment activities, tax help assistance and financial coaching.
