South Austin Rotary joined clubs around the world on October 24 to celebrate World Polio Day and participate in the World’s Largest Polio Walk, supporting Rotary International’s ongoing mission to eradicate polio.
Rotarians, friends, and supporters gathered to walk, raise awareness, and help fund the global effort to protect children from this preventable disease. Sporting their purple Polio Walk shirts and blue Rotary Rockstar tie-dye shirts, South Austin Rotary members showed their Rotary spirit and commitment to making a difference.
The club’s participation was part of an extraordinary regional effort across Zones 25B and 29, where 444 Rotary clubs across 16 districts and seven states came together for the cause. Together, the Zones are on track to raise more than $1.2 million to support polio eradication.
The guest speaker is Dr. Jeanne Cox, the originator and chair of the Field of Honor in Georgetown, the 9-day event in San Gabriel Park. The mission of Field of Honor is four-fold. One: to honor and benefit past and present military, first responders, and their families. Two: to inspire patriotism and pride in our country and flag. Three: to educate youth that visit during school field trips and those that attend the event. Four: to unify our communities in peacefully and respectfully honoring our flag, our country, and those who defend us.
Dawn Lewis is going to Laos for the month for TerraClear. She is taking ten people, including six Rotarians, with her. She will represent our club on this trip, exchanging flags with Rotary clubs she visits. Mickie says holidays at the soup kitchen can be hard, but as of yesterday someone will donate all the pies. She still needs fifteen turkeys, if anyone wants to donate. Allison just got back from Chaing Mai, Thailand, where she visited monks, communed with tigers, and swam with elephants.
